Coady Wing joined O'Neill in 2014 after serving as assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and as a post-doctoral fellow at Northwestern University. He holds a PhD from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.
Wing specializes in the economic analysis of public policies and regulations, with a particular interest in effects on health behaviors, health outcomes, and the delivery of health care services. He also conducts research on methodological topics related to causal inference and program evaluation.
Some of Wing's recent work is concerned with the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, he has studied the effects of state social distancing policies on cellphone-based measures of mobility and interaction, the distribution of job losses in the first wave of the pandemic, the role of large sporting events on the downstream severity of the epidemic, and the effects of the early vaccination campaign on COVID-19 deaths.
In other work, Wing has examined the way that labor and product market regulations shape health behaviors and the delivery of health services. For example, he has studied the effects of medical and recreational marijuana regulations on substance use and on the sales of alcohol, tobacco, and over-the-counter pain medication. And his work on occupational regulation in the health sector examines the way that labor markets for nurse practitioners, dental hygienists, and pharmacists affect the cost and availability of basic health services such as well care visits, teeth cleanings and fillings, and vaccinations.
His research has been published in well-regarded journals including Journal of Health Economics, American Journal of Health Economics, Health Affairs, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Demography, Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, Political Analysis, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
